WORLD SICKLE CELL AWARENESS DAY – JUNE 19, 2025

Shining a Light on Sickle Cell: Together for Hope and Healing

Every year on June 19, the world comes together to raise awareness for a disease that affects millions—but is too often forgotten: Sickle Cell Disease (SCD).

At Hope Clinic Bertoua, we are not only caregivers—we are companions in the journey of families affected by this painful and life-altering condition. On World Sickle Cell Awareness Day, we speak loudly and clearly for every child who’s missed school, every parent who’s spent nights in hospital corridors, and every warrior who faces crisis after crisis with strength beyond words.

🧬 What is Sickle Cell Disease?
It’s a genetic disorder that causes red blood cells to become rigid and shaped like sickles, making it difficult for them to flow freely and carry oxygen efficiently. The result? Frequent pain, risk of stroke, infections, and organ damage.

📊 The Reality in Cameroon:

  • 1 in 4 Cameroonians carries the sickle cell trait.
  • Many families don’t know their genetic status.
  • Access to treatment and early diagnosis remains limited, especially in rural areas.

💪🏽 Our Mission at Hope Clinic Bertoua
We believe that awareness is the first step toward change. Our clinic continues to provide:

  • Routine screenings
  • Genetic counseling for families
  • Regular care and support for children and adults living with SCD

🎗️ This June 19, we stand in solidarity with every sickle cell warrior.
Let’s break the silence. Let’s end the stigma. Let’s empower communities through education, empathy, and early testing.

🧬 Get tested. Know your genotype. Share the message.
Together, we can build a future where no child suffers in silence.
